Dave Hyatt writes about specialization. I've always had a hard time with this, as the subtitle of this blog should indicate at least. In fact I think I've reached a breaking point—I'm finding it next to impossible to find time to work enough on that which isn't optional. And there are things I used to do but don't do enough any more (cooking, music) which I really enjoy.
Over the next week I'll be reevaluating my priorities and dumping a lot of stuff. This will almost certainly involve scaling back my free time programming efforts, IRCing, mailing list and Usenet subscriptions, involvement in projects like Metakit and Subversion, and perhaps some of my blogging and Web work. Doing less independent software work will be easier now: my research is really starting to keep me awake at night with my mind full of possibilities—exactly what I need to be incredibly productive at it.
If you're planning on upgrading your desktop Power Mac G4's memory any time soon, heed this warning. The price difference between working and non-working 512 MB DIMMs is about $20 each. I bought two of the latter last week; they aren't even heavy enough to use as paperweights.
DS Password Tools are “a pair of command line tools for changing passwords on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server that make use of the Directory Services API. Unlike the included passwd program, these tools are compatible with Jaguar Password Server.”
ICeCoffEE 1.3.2 was released Thursday night. I'm now trying to figure out what on earth to do after weeks of essentially being able to do no work, and am meeting with my advisor on Monday.
Vonage has replaced their voicemail system. The previous system was horribly unreliable, and didn't let non-Windows users listen to voice mail messages online, so the replacement was obviously needed. Unfortunately, the email messages informing you that “you have voicemail” are no longer remotely informative, and worse yet, SpamAssassin now thinks they're spam.
So, we've gone from:
Subject: [Rileys] You have a new voice mail message from 1631725xxxx
to:
Subject: *****SPAM***** [Rileys] Voicemail Message Waiting
Uh, good going, folks. I notice Vonage is advertising on VersionTracker with something about “the !@%#$ phone company”. Don't turn into another !@%#$ phone company then, OK?
For the people who were experiencing ViewCVS errors on svn.sabi.net: sorry, fixed. If it isn't working, there's an email address on the error page: use it to email me! Somehow the Fink-built Python was interfering with my custom-built Python, even though I clearly specify /usr/local/bin/python in the CGI script. I didn't need Fink's Python anyway, so I removed it and everything is back to normal. Go figure.
ICeCoffEE 1.3.2 should be available soon, with a minor new feature, several bug fixes and Japanese localization. I'd have Pester 1.1 released by now if it weren't for my extended illness; it's been feature complete for some time, but I keep finding more bugs than I have time to fix.
